Faqs

Salkantay is the second highest mountain in the Cusco region at 6,271 m / 20,574 ft. It is located in the Vilcabamba Mountain Range, 60 km northwest of Cusco, in the central Andes of Peru. Salkantay means “wild mountain” and is considered by locals to be a holy god who has controlled the climate and fertility since Inca times.
Salkantay to Machu Picchu are ancient hiking routes that form a perfect alternative route called Salkantay Trek Peru. This trek can be complemented by a 4 or 5 day trek to Machu Picchu.
The Salkantay Trek can be done in different ways depending on the route or operator. The most popular trips are the 4 and 5 day ones. Less than 4 days can be quite a challenge, and trips of more than 5 days generally include tours of the city of Cusco or tours of the Sacred Valley.
After the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, the Salkantay Trek route is the most popular hike to Machu Picchu. This stunning trek also offers travelers different experiences, from high mountains with cool temperatures to a high jungle called “cloud forest”. These varied landscapes offer hikers unique opportunities to experience different landscapes, climates and weather conditions, with the chance to reach Machu Picchu before dawn.
It is important to note the difference between Salkantay Mountain at 6,271 m / 20,574 ft and Salkantay Pass at 4,630 m / 15,190 ft.
Last night in Aguas Calientes: 2,000 m / 6,561 ft
Here we show you what the weather is like on the different days of the walk.
Day 2: The second day offers two completely different climate zones. In the first part you cross the Salkantay Pass. This day is the most difficult part of the hike, usually sunny. However, when it rains, the temperature drops below freezing and it is necessary to wear a jacket, hat and gloves.
Day 3: On the third day you will hike through the tropical rainforest all day. You should bring light clothing to protect yourself from the sun, mosquito repellent and water. Night temperatures can be around 10°C / 53°F
How much does the hike to Salkantay cost?
We recommend you make your reservation in advance and with a trusted company. This trip involves hiking at high altitude and on slippery terrain and you must have complete trust in the company and the tour guide.
How to prepare for the 4-day Salkantay trek?
Although it is not necessary to train months in advance. However, walking for one or two hours, always increasing the frequency and duration of the trip as you get closer to the day of your trip, you can also do a few hours of training in the gym, running or spinning can also help.
At Peru Local Expeditions we will always take care of your health, and everything we advise you is for the good of your health and your lifestyle.
Below, we give you some tips to avoid altitude sickness throughout this hike:
You should avoid hikes like Rainbow Mountain, which include high-altitude hikes.
During the first days in Cusco, eat a lot of water, light something and drink a lot. Coca-Cola will help.
Machu Picchu is the main tourist destination in South America and Peru; We have limited access to this sanctuary. We have 2 railway companies. Pueblo de Aguas Calientes or Machu Picchu Pueblo is a small town that receives thousands of tourists. With these factors in mind, you should always book your itinerary in advance.
When is the best time to hike the Salkantay and visit Machu Picchu?
January and February are the months to avoid this type of trek due to the rains and the risk of landslides. During these months we recommend the Lares hike.
