At 6,271 meters or 20,574 feet, Salkantay is the second highest peak in the Cusco region. It is located in the middle of the Peruvian Andes, 60 kilometers from Cusco, near the west-northwest of the Vilcabamba Mountain Range. Salkantay, meaning “wild mountain,” is revered by locals as a sacred deity who has governed fertility and climate since Inca times.
What is the Salkantay Trek?
The Salkantay-Cusco trek can be completed in four or five days, and the Salkantay Pass reaches a maximum elevation of 4,630 meters (15,190 feet). Adventure Travel magazine, published by National Geographic, named this hike one of the 25 best hikes in the world.
As a matter of fact! Hiking Salkantay provides a certain sense of accomplishment that other treks simply cannot match. This hike is a wonderful combination of natural beauty and historical monuments; It begins high in the mountains, where the landscape is dominated by snow-capped peaks and cold temperatures, and ends in the high jungle, also known as cloud forest.
How high is the Salkantay hike?
• Second camp: 2,770 m / 9,087 ft
• Last night in Aguas Caliente: 2,000 m / 6,561 ft
The walk crosses different ecosystems and altitudes. Therefore, the weather can change radically. In the highlands the temperature can drop to 0°C and in the cloud forest it can reach 24°C.
This hike is characterized as a bit difficult, so be prepared for long days of hiking in cold, rainy, cloudy and sunny conditions. We will camp the first night in sub-zero temperatures with no access to electricity or telephone.
This route is considered moderate; you only require moderate physical condition to complete the walk. You don’t have to be an excellent hiker, but you do have to be physically active.
We recommend taking short, steep hikes on weekends or at least twice a month.
Altitude sickness is real and can affect anyone, whether or not they are an experienced hiker. This Salkantay Trek Cusco tour includes pre-hike activities to help you easily acclimatize to the altitude:
Carry altitude medications such as Diamox or other medications recommended by your doctor.
The best time to visit Machu Picchu is from April to November, during the dry season. April and November are the shoulder months and weather conditions are expected to improve.
