The Choquequirao Trek takes you off the beaten path, away from crowded places. This trip does not take you to Machu Picchu. Instead, you will go to another lost Inca citadel. This spectacular archaeological site was hidden in the mountains for centuries and was only recently discovered. During the hike to Choquequirao, you may see less than a dozen travelers, making this place a truly unique and peaceful escape.

Itinerary

DAY 1:

Cusco – Cachora – Capuliyoc – Chikiska

We will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco city at 4:30 am and drive approximately 4 hours to Capuliyoc, where you will enjoy a delicious breakfast prepared by our trekking chef. Local expeditions from Peru to Choquequirao begin with a 4-hour hike from Capuliyoc (2,950 m/9,678 ft) to Chikiska at 1,950 m (6,398 ft). Along the route you will have impressive views of the Apurimac Canyon, one of the deepest in Peru, and the multiple landscapes, from the Peruvian mountains to the lush foliage of the cloud forest.

You wake up around 5:00 am in your tent with a steaming cup of coffee or Coca-Cola Mate and begin packing for the most difficult part of the trek to Choquequirao. After breakfast at the camp, we begin a hike of moderate difficulty through impressive landscapes to Playa Rosalina (1,500 m). After approximately 1.5 hours of walking we arrived at Playa Rosalina. You will cross the Apurimac River via a suspension bridge and walk 2 hours uphill to Santa Rosa, where we will stop for lunch with stunning views of the mountains and river.

After lunch, we will continue uphill for another 2.5 hours to the town of Marampata (2940 m / 9646 ft), where we will spend the night with spectacular views. It is the most beautiful campsite on the hike; They have incredible views and clear night skies, perfect for stargazing.

We will wake you up early with a nice cup of tea or hot coffee with cola to watch the incredible sunrise in the mountains. After breakfast, you will drive up and down for approximately two hours, giving you the entire day to explore beautiful Choquequirao. Your guide will take you on a complete tour of the most beautiful places and teach you the history of Choquequirao and the Incas. Choquequirao (Golden Cradle) It is called the twin sister of Machu Picchu, but it is almost twice the size. For this reason, this largely unknown place is expected to soon become one of the most popular tourist destinations in South America. After taking enough time to discover Choquequirao, we return to the same camp for dinner and overnight.

The second morning we will wake up in this magical place and enjoy the fantastic sunrise. After a delicious breakfast, we begin a 4-hour descent to Playa Rosalina (1,500 m). The trail is mostly downhill and offers stunning views of the mountains. The second part of the day begins with a two-hour hike to Camp Coca Masana (2,330 m – 7,545 ft). It is a perfect day to enjoy the landscape and nature that surrounds us. Along the way we will find a variety of flowers and birds and you can hear waterfalls in the distance.

On our last day we will wake up for the last time with a coca tea in our tent, have breakfast and prepare for our last three-hour hike up the mountain to Capuliyoc. We will have lunch and say goodbye to our team of leaders and porters who accompanied this expedition. We will then take our private transportation to the archaeological site of Saywite, a beautifully carved rock that is still a mystery to archaeologists. You’ll have plenty of time to explore before returning to Cusco and being dropped off at your hotel around 5:00 p.m.

The best time for the Choquequirao Trek is the dry season, which lasts from May to September. The weather at this time is generally clear and dry and the trails are in good condition.
