DAY 1:

Cusco – Lares Thermal Baths – Blue Lagoon

At 4:30 am we will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco and take you by van to the famous thermotherapy pools of Lares. Whether you are in Cusco or the Sacred Valley around Urubamba or Pisac, we can pick you up from a hotel, hostel, Airbnb or any other location. From Cusco we drive 1 hour to Calca in the Sacred Valley, where we visit the market and buy local products. We will then drive another 2 hours to the Lares Hot Springs, where you can bathe in therapeutic pools with different temperatures, useful for bones, muscles and stress relief, while enjoying the stunning views of the mountains. Then, your trekking chef will prepare a hearty breakfast for you.

After breakfast, we will drive 30 minutes to Pampa Corral and begin a two-hour walk to Kiswarani Village, where we will enjoy a freshly prepared lunch with local ingredients by our talented chefs. We then hike for two hours to our first camp on the shores of a beautiful Andean lake, passing potato fields, waterfalls and stunning mountain views as we head towards the Blue Lake at 3900 m (12,795 ft). Once you arrive at the campsite, your tents will be set up and a hot cup of cola or coffee will be waiting for you.

During the day, enjoy fantastic views of the Sacred Valley, explore the Lares district, soak in the hot springs, and take a short hike through the beautiful valley. You will also pass potato farms, visit Kiswarani village, interact with locals, walk with llamas and alpacas and enjoy Kiswarani waterfalls. At the camp you will have hot water to wash, drink tea and look at the stars before sleeping in our comfortable tents.

The essence of the Lares hike

For three days you are in the mountains without roads, electricity or mobile signal. For this hike it is important that you have the necessary equipment with you. Very easy to pack though.

  • Small and comfortable backpack
  • Original passport
  • Mountain boots
  • Hiking poles
  • Lighthouse
  • warm jackets
  • Gloves
  • Sunscreen
  • Photo camera
  • The emergency money is in soles.

What goes in the backpack?

The backpack will always be with you; You are responsible for wearing it while walking during the day and it should be as light as possible. Remember that at the campsite you will only find canvas bags and everything you need during the day should be in your backpack.

Passport. – Passports should always be with you in a safe and dry place; We recommend storing them in Ziploc bags with cash and other documents.

Student ID: If you booked as a student, you must bring your student ID, especially when we enter Machu Picchu.

Canteens. – You must bring reusable water containers; They must be easy to handle and have a minimum capacity of 2 liters.

Rain ponchos, waterproof jackets. – Duffel bags come with plastic rain ponchos; Even so, you should bring a waterproof or windproof jacket.

Sunscreen, hat, and long-sleeved shirts. – You are crossing an open area without protection and you must always be protected.

A warm jacket. – It’s cold early in the morning. You start walking with all the layers and slowly remove them as you begin the warm-up. Even on the hottest days you will always have a warm jacket with you. The temperature in the Andes can fluctuate in a matter of minutes.

Mini first aid kit. – You should always carry your medications and patches, high altitude medicines, pain relievers, Cipro, allergy pills, insect repellent and others with you.

Headlamp, camera, mobile phone, sunglasses.

Toilet paper. – It should always be in your backpack.

Extra money. – It is important to always carry money with you for the trip; We recommend around 600 soles ($200) in cash; For anything you buy on the train, such as water or souvenirs, it is best to bring small coins worth at least 20 soles with you. The trip is not meant to be spent; This only applies to emergencies.

What should be packed in the duffel bag?

The sports bag will be delivered at the informational talk one day before the walk in our office. You can transport up to 8 kilos, including a sleeping bag and inflatable mattress.

  • Sleeping Bag: A 4-season (-10°) sleeping bag is required for this hike; You can bring your own or rent it from us. If you rent this with our company you will receive a siding so you don’t have to buy it.

  • Pillows: We provide you with small camping pillows during this hike.
  • Shoes: We strongly recommend wearing shoes that you have previously worn, we do not recommend new shoes as these may hurt your foot.

Faqs

The Lares Trek is an alternative trek to Machu Picchu that takes you on a 4 to 5 day adventure. This hike is perfect for travelers who prefer more cultural interactions, visiting uncrowded routes, and exploring remote mountains where llamas and alpacas live.
The Lares Trek can be done in 4 days and 5 days:
It is located on the eastern bank of the Andes, near the district of Lares, about 150 km from Cusco. The walk begins at the Lares Hot Springs (3,250 m), a three-hour drive from Cusco. The district of Lares belongs to the Calca province of Cusco.
Pickup for this tour is from your hotel in Cusco city at 3,399 m/11,151 ft.
The highest point is the Col du Condor at 4,700 m / 15,354 ft.
The final destination is Machu Picchu at 2430 m / 7972 ft.
The entire Cusco region only has 2 stations; In the Andes there is no summer, winter, autumn or spring. We only have rainy and dry seasons:
Weather in Lares Trek March: March is still the rainy season; However, less rain is expected than in January or February. The temperature is hot during the day and less hot at night; It is the beginning of the harvest season for farmers and children return to school.
Weather in Lares Trek May: This month is one of the best of the year to walk to Machu Picchu. It is the beginning of the dry season. However, occasional rain may occur even in the driest months.
Weather in Lares Trek in July: The weather in June in Lares Trek is around 21°C (70°C) during the day, but at night it can drop below 0°C (30°F). The morning is cold due to frost and sometimes we see snow in the mountains. Although these are the driest months of the year, sometimes it rains and you have to be prepared.
Weather in Lares Trek in September: With the return of the rains after the long dry season, the landscape is green again, the ponds are back and with it the birds. The daytime temperature is warm and the nighttime temperature is no longer so cold.
Weather in Lares Trek November: Start of the rainy or rainy season; However, in some years the dry season could be prolonged, such as in 2022, where the rains returned almost in December. The days are warm and the night temperature is not very cold.
Kiswarani Waterfalls: On the first day, visit the magnificent 7 waterfalls near Kiswarani village.
Llamas and Alpacas: From the first day you will see herds of llamas and alpacas grazing at the top of the mountain.
Canchacancha Town: This remote town is located at 2,700 m elevation and is 4 hours from the closed road. People travel on foot to get supplies and use llamas to transport goods.
Ollantaytambo: The city of Ollantaytambo is considered the “last living Inca citadel,” as residents still use the original roads, gates, and even water channels that have been in use since Inca times.
All hiking routes lead to Machu Picchu; The best route with different experiences is:
Day 3: CanchaCancha – Huaran – Ollantaytambo – Aguas Calientes
How much does a group tour cost?
Peru Local Expeditions charges $590 per person for a nearly all-inclusive tour with 3-star hotels and Vistadome scenic trains.
If you compare the best trekking tours to Machu Picchu: the Classic Inca Trail, the Salkantay Trek and the Lares Trek, the latter is considered less intense; However, it reaches the highest height. This hike is considered medium to moderate difficulty as the daily hike lasts an average of 6 hours. Travelers must be able to physically walk for several hours at an average altitude of 3,500 meters.
We cannot avoid altitude sickness; Regardless of age, physical level or experience; This can happen to anyone, even experienced hikers. The best way to avoid this is to arrive at least two days before the start of the hike, rest in Cusco before the tour, eat light and drink plenty of water. You should also bring medication for the altitude.
Unlike the Salkantay Trek or the Inca Trail, the Lares Trek is available all year round due to heavy rain.
